Honouring Remembrance at Lion Yard
At Lion Yard, we believe in the power of community and remembrance. This year, we proudly marked our 5th consecutive Remembrance season with meaningful events that brought our community together to honour those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
The Pillar of Poppies
At the heart of our Remembrance commemorations stands the Pillar of Poppies, an extraordinary installation that has captured the attention and hearts of all who visit. This remarkable tribute, standing over 5 metres tall, was lovingly crafted by our Deputy Manager, Gemma Carelli, and her mother. Together, they hand-knitted nearly 1,000 poppies, each one symbolising the dedication and sacrifice of military personnel, past and present.
The Pillar was a striking focal point in Lion Yard throughout the Remembrance season, encouraging visitors to pause, reflect, and remember the heroes who have shaped our nation’s history.
A Weekend of Reflection and Learning
On Saturday, 9th November, Lion Yard hosted a unique showcase of history. The Norfolk Regiment brought a fascinating collection of WW1 and WW2 artefacts to our main atrium, giving visitors a chance to connect with the past through tangible pieces of history. From medals and uniforms to everyday items used by soldiers, the exhibit offered an insightful glimpse into the lives of those who served.
The Remembrance Service
The week culminated in a poignant Remembrance Service on Sunday, 10th November, led by the Salvation Army Band. Gathered by the Pillar of Poppies, members of our community joined together at 11am for a moment of reflection and gratitude, honouring both the fallen and those who continue to serve today. This shared moment underscored the importance of remembrance and unity, reinforcing the values that bring us together.
Five Years of Dedication
Lion Yard is immensely proud of the role we’ve played in supporting the Cambridge Poppy Appeal, raising over £150,000 in the last five years. This achievement reflects the generosity and dedication of our community, and we’re committed to continuing this important work for years to come.
Our efforts during the Remembrance season are not just about tradition—they’re about creating a space for education, gratitude, and togetherness. The Pillar of Poppies and our community events have touched countless hearts, inspiring reflection and a renewed appreciation for the sacrifices made by so many.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us in remembering and honouring our Armed Forces. Together, we keep their legacy alive.
